The Three Kagyu Masters—Tilopa, Naropa, and Marpa—form the foundational transmission lineage of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, often referred to as the "Lineage of Oral Transmission." These realized beings passed down profound teachings of Mahamudra and Vajrayana through unbroken lineage, with deep emphasis on direct experience, personal realization, and devotion.

The Three Kagyu Masters are more than historical figures—they represent the living flame of direct transmission, spiritual courage, and realization beyond form. Their legacy continues in the Kagyu schools, including the Karma Kagyu, Drikung Kagyu, and Drukpa Kagyu.

1. Tilopa (988–1069)
Tilopa was an Indian Mahasiddha and the original source of the Kagyu lineage. A wandering yogi and mystic, he attained supreme realization through teachings from multiple masters and direct visionary experience. He is famed for receiving transmissions like Mahamudra, Six Yogas, and Tantric instructions. His name means “sesame grinder,” reflecting his humble lifestyle and spontaneous wisdom.

He transmitted the core teachings of Mahamudra to his disciple Naropa.

2. Naropa (1016–1100)
Naropa was a brilliant scholar and abbot at Nalanda University before leaving everything behind to seek Tilopa. After undergoing twelve legendary trials, Naropa attained full realization and received the Six Yogas of Naropa, one of the key tantric teachings in Vajrayana.

His story exemplifies transformation through hardship and the deep importance of guru devotion in the path to enlightenment.

3. Marpa Lotsawa (1012–1097)
Marpa, known as the Great Translator, was a Tibetan yogi and householder who made arduous journeys to India to receive teachings from Naropa and other great masters. He returned to Tibet to translate and transmit the tantric texts and oral instructions.

Marpa is the key link between Indian Mahasiddhas and Tibetan Buddhism. He became the root teacher of Milarepa, Tibet’s beloved yogi and poet-saint.
